*Next General Meeting May 22 at Marion Grange in Buckley*
(this is a one time only date change to a Thursday)
Top-Two "Primary" means changes for us.
Because the purpose of the "Top-Two Primary" is NOT to nominate a candidate from within a political party for the General Election, (which is the constitutional right of any political party), it cannot be used to determine who our Democratic candidates will be when there is more than one Democratic candidate in a given race. Therefore we will be holding Nominating Conventions, for both Congressional Districts and Legislative Districts. On Saturday May 17, the 9th Congressional District and the 8th Congressional District will have their respective PCOs (elected and appointed) listen to candidates for Congress and then nominate the one in each CD who will be the Democratic Party Nominee. The 9th CD will be meeting at North Thurston High School, 600 Sleator-Kinney Rd NE in Lacy at 10 am; and the 8th CD will be meeting at Tahoma High School, 18200 SE 240th St in Covington at 10 am. All PCOs are encouraged to arrive early in order to sign in. These are also the locations, date, and times for the Congressional District Caucuses (confusing ain't it?) at which those elected as Delegates and Alternate Delegates on April 5 will meet to elect those who will go as Delegates to Denver in August. If you are a PCO but not an elected Delegate or Alternate, your day will be short and you can leave after voting on the nomination of your candidate for congress. If you are only a Delegate or Alternate, then you will, after signing in, observe what the PCOs do, and then you'll get on with your task for the day. If you are both a PCO and a Delegate or Alternate, you get to do both things on May 17.
On Thursday May 22, the 31st District Democrats will hold both our monthly general meeting AND our own Legislative District Nominating Convention. During the Nominating Convention portion of the evening, everyone attending will listen to our candidates for State Representative (incumbent Christopher Hurst Position 2, and challenger Ron Weigelt Position 1 are the known and declared candidates to date) ask for our nomination in each of their races (two separate races; they are not running against each other). Then our elected and appointed PCOs will cast their ballots to nominate. This is a proces separate and distinct from "endorsement" of these candidates and other candidates for office. Once we get used to this new process, which the "Top-Two Primary" has forced on us, we'll no doubt have a longer period of time between the "endorsing" of a candidate and the nomination of a candidate to be the Democratic Party's choice in a given race.
