An Open Letter to King County Democrats Chair and State Democrats Chair

Subject: Sam Reed has removed 340,000 Legal Voters from the State Voter Rolls
Dear Susan and Dwight (ladies first),
I attended the State Grange Convention in Moses Lake a week ago. Sam Reed, figuring he was in a conservative controlled bastion, proudly explained how he had used (misapplied) computer databases to create justifications for removing legal voters from the state voter rolls. Of course he made it sound like he was doing a great public service because they were not legal voters. However, anyone with a reasonable computing background would have seen the lie immediately. He used errant rationalizations like those used to remove 80,000 black service members serving overseas from voter rolls during the 2004 and 2006 elections.
Mr. Reed claims to have removed 340,000 illegal voters from the voter rolls. However, the supposedly logical rationalizations he gave for the searches were at best incomplete, and in most cases totally without sound logic. The correlations (matches) returned by the searches would prove nothing. The matches are unlikely to indicate illegal voters, except possibly by accident in a few cases out of tens of thousands. In these rare cases where returned correlations from the searches described might be an indicator of an illegal voter, there are correct procedures to validate the situation before any removal should be allowed. Any qualified and honest computer person will tell you that the only rational way to use that data is to go out and contact the person involved personally and validate the actual situation. This means sending out investigators to meet with the voters to determine if they are or are not legal voters. This was not done to any satisfactory degree. In fact, the legal voters removed from the voter rolls were never even notified. This is why so many thousands of legal and previously registered voters in 2004 and 2006 had to use provisional ballots. Sam Reed did not allow these provisional ballots to be counted. Is the pattern beginning to emerge?
Republican Sam Reed's approach was the same as the one taken by Katherine Harris in Florida in 2000 and by Ken Blackwell in Ohio in 2004 to disenfranchise hundreds of thousands of legal voters(at least 80% Black Democratic voters) in each of these states. The groups chosen for analysis and type of analysis chosen by these Republicans are based on their ability to identify predominantly Democratic voters. The Republican Party is under court order not to use these types of techniques and has been under court order not to use these types of disenfranchisement methods since 1986. By having a loyal Republican state official take the equivalent of these actions they get around the court order.
When a thorough analysis of these removed voters was done in Florida following the 2000 election, with the exception of deceased people, it was shown that more than 96% of the voters removed from the voter rolls by Katherine Harris were legal voters. Similar results are now coming out of Ohio related to the 2006 election.
The Republican Party in concert with the US Chamber of Commerce and traitorous billionaires have had an approach for years of stealing the offices of both Secretary of State and State Attorney General. Then, they have the Secretary of State orchestrate massive election fraud and have the State Attorney General there to prevent investigation and indictment of the actions. At this point, history will show that the Republican Party is nothing but a criminal enterprise serving inherited wealth masters (Koch, Coors, Scaife, Walton, etc.).
The Democratic Party must demand that Sam Reed reveal his whole process and all the names removed from the voter rolls. The Democratic Party must then randomly chose at least 10% of that list and go find out what part of these individuals are legal voters. We can then get the people Sam removed from the voter rolls (of all parties) to bring suit against Sam Reed. We can shut down all the Republican illegal tactics of election fraud (caging, slamming phone lines, misdistribution of voting machines, voter intimidation, etc.) and help ensure a better chance of an honest election in 2008.
It is time to go on the attack, and put the Republicans on the defensive. As long as they are allowed to commit their crimes, and I would say treason (a term a former military officer does not take lightly), without risk they will continue to successfully steal elections and with it our democracy.
