WANT TO BE AN OBSERVER?
In an effort to try and ensure the integrity of elections, the office of the Secretary of State in Washington is allowing the two major political parties (Democratic and Republican) to have observers volunteer to watch elections workers process ballots. The election center in Pierce County has been using this advantage but it could be used even more if more people became interested.
In order to observe in Pierce County you must first be registered to vote in Pierce County. Then you must become certified, annually. Certification is usually in June of each year but sometimes extra classes are held in order to get more people the opportunity to volunteer. You also have to choose whether you identify with the Democratic Party or the Republican Party. During the processing hours only one observer from each party is on the floor; one Democrat and on Republican.
Observers are allowed to walk inside where the employed election workers go through their routine. They observer quietly without disturbing the workers. If they have questions they direct the questions to the designated managers or supervisor. They may also talk to the observer on the floor from the other party if the other party has provided one for that shift. Other than that anywhere there is anything to do with voted ballots observers have the privilege of being a witness to it.
There are currently 11 Democratic observers certified to volunteer for shifts. I would like to see at least 25; ideally 30. I am asking people to at least try and find one Democrat who would be interested in volunteering for this worthy privileged. The more observers there the easier it will be to keep the shifts filled without either over-volunteering an observer or having lots of shifts where there is no Dem.
Anything you can do to help will be appreciated.
